CLOS DE L'ORIGINE

Marc Barriot – word of whose wines unfortunately reached me only after I had scheduled my December visits in Roussillon – is yet another newcomer who found here (in 2004) an opportunity that would have been denied him practically anywhere else in France, to build an estate from the ground up yet with superb terroir and ancient vines. The wine lover’s reward is a group of excellent values. His biodynamic methods, including plowing by horse, and the near absence of sulfur from his wines do not seem in themselves exceptional for this region, although l’Origine is noteworthy (despite what the word “Clos” might connote) for having vineyards in diverse soils and microclimates of no fewer than five villages: Calc, Maury, Estagel, Montner, and Latour de France, wines from the last three of which (provided the blends are allowed) can be bottled under “Latour de France.” - David Schildknecht, The Wine Advocate
