MAROF

Marof is the new Slovenian project of Austrian winemaker Erich Krutzler, who formerly ran – and, indeed, was largely responsible for – the Dveri Pax winery adjacent to Austria’s South Styrian growing region. The Marof estate – located near the convergence of Slovenia, Austria, and Hungary – was for centuries a property of the counts Szapary (whose name is still associated with one of the finest red wine sites in Austria, about which, consult the reports on wines of Schiefer and Weninger in issue 181). More to the point, the initial crop of Marof estate wines offers distinctive personalities and price-quality rapport that should not go unnoticed by any wine lovers. In Central Europe, a word for “Rhine” requires appending to “Riesling” to avoid confusion with Olasz Rizling a.k.a. Welschriesling a.k.a. Riesling Italico et. al., a ubiquitous but totally unrelated grape. Here – as with the impressive Rieslings of Egon Muller’s Chateau Bela in Slovakia – it bears emphasizing that amazing results are being achieved with clonal selections and vine training left over from an era of tractor farming, collectivization, and over-cropping, so just imagine what the superior vine selections and loving care of the future will bring! - David Schildknecht, The Wine Advocate

The name of the winery "MAROF" means "Meierhof" in German language and it is an agricultural estate, which goes back to 1905, when the family called "Szápáry" built a kind of "hunting caste" together with agricultural buildings and a wine cellar there. Count Peter Szápáry bought the town of Murska Sobota in 1690 and the family had been owner till the territory was incorporated by Slovenian state in 1919.

After Szápáry family left 1934 the estate was part of "Kingdom of Yugoslavia" and after the Second World War it was part of the "Socialistic federal Republic of Yugoslavia". After gaining independence of Slovenia in 1991 the estate was bought by Panvita group. Last year MAROF d.o.o. has been founded and is now responsible for quality wine production.
