CHATEAU MOURGUES DU GRES
One of the most impressive estates in the Costieres de Nimes (a treasure-trove of value-priced wines), Mourgues du Gres’ reds and whites are all worth checking out by consumers looking to maximizing their buying power. - Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
Mourgues (a convent) du Gres is located on the last "spill" of the glacial galets (of Chateauneuf-du-Pape fame), at the end of the Rhone, near Beaucaire. Here young Collard has found a great spot for the fruit aspect of Syrah to be expressed.
The Rose has such intense ripe strawberry fruit that it almost tastes sweet, yet is completely dry. The Rouge has intense blackberry fruit, and the cuvee Terre D’Argence adds to that a deep, black cherry and spice component. Great winemaking and great values.
"In a few years Mourgues du Gres has become in our opinion the best domaine of Costieres de Nimes, thanks to the stunning openness of his red and rose wines which are essentially pure Syrah. Conforming to the style of this varietal to the North of the valley of the Rhone, the red wines are deeply colored, glistening with their beautiful aromas of cassis and black fruits, seducing with their svelt profundity, in particular the prestige cuvee baptized Terre D’Argence. The domaine offers an inordinately magnificent rose that expresses a raciness of fruit and density that is rare". - Le Classement, 2000 Revue du Vin de France
