Red wine. Chiroubles, Beaujolais, France. Organic. 100% Gamay. "Pauline Passot’s vines in this great vineyard range from forty to more than sixty years of age. The wine comes in listed at 14.5 percent in the 2020 vintage, but it seems a touch cooler than this to me, as it offers up a beautiful complex bouquet of cherries, sweet cranberry, rose petals, gamebird, a beautifully refined base of soil, a dollop of fresh herbs and plenty of woodsmoke. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and transparent in personality, with a sappy core of red fruit, fine focus and grip, impeccable balance, tangy acids, buried tannins and a very long, seamless and complex finish. This is more svelte in structural chassis than the more chewy Claudius bottling in 2020, though the Grillé-Midi also has a good foundation of ripe tannins to carry it far into the future.
