Domaine Spotlight: Birgit Eichinger
Birgit Eichinger is a pioneer. She's one of the first female winemakers not only in Austria's Kamptal region, but also in Austria at large.
After getting her start in 1992, when she and her husband Christian founded their winery with only 3.5 hectares of vineyards inherited from Birgit's parents, Ms. Eichinger quickly rose to prominence as a producer of beautifully elegant wines from the Kamptal—a small region in northern Austria known for steep sandstone slopes and high sun exposure where Riesling thrives.
Thanks to Christian's skills as a builder, the estate's facilities exhibit a loving attention to detail—a trait mirrored by Birgit's approach to winemaking. It helps that the operation remains small—grapes (a traditional mix of Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Chardonnay and Roter Veltliner) are sourced from only 9 hectares of vineyards spread out over the region's best terroirs.
And those terroirs are what make Eichinger's wines a hot commodity.
