Collection: Jeb Dunnuck's Picks

"I love tasting with importer Peter Weygandt and he has an incredibly diverse portfolio that always seems to deliver the goods. Peter always comments that he loves crisp, pure wines, and while those characteristics are seemingly always present, I’d like to add that his wines also deliver concentration, depth, and intensity, as well as singular characters.

This tasting looks at a handful of his new releases from a number of regions in France including Alsace, Loire, Burgundy, the Rhône Valley, Languedoc, and the Roussillon, well as plenty of wines from Austria, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Portugal. These are primarily tiny, family-run estates focusing on sustainable and organic farming, low yields, and high quality; it shows in the wines. I continue to be a huge fan of the wines brought in by Weygandt and these are unquestionably worth your time and money."

Red wine. Southern Rhône, France. 92% Grenache, 7% Mourvèdre, 1% Carignan. Biodynamic. "I suspect the 2016 Rasteau Cuvee 1921 is the finest wine to date from this estate; it’s unquestionably one of the finest Rasteau I’ve tasted. Flat-out stunning notes of spring flowers, orange blossom, violets, and blueberries all emerge from this full-bodied effort that has ample power and richness, yet beautiful elegance and purity at the same time. It’s going to benefit from a year or two of cellaring and keep for a decade." — 95 Points, Jeb Dunnuck (May 2019)

    $37.00
White wine. Wachau, Austria. Sustainable. 100% Grüner Veltliner. "The 2016 FX Pichler Riesling Durnsteiner Smaragd is another thrilling wine from this estate. It has a backward, slightly reductive style that slowly opens up to reveals tons of flinty minerality, honeyed citrus, and tart lime aromas and flavors. Brilliantly balanced, laser-focused, and concentrated, it’s nevertheless incredibly elegant and balanced. It’s a rock star Riesling to enjoy over the coming 15+ years." — 95 Points, Jeb Dunnuck (May 2019)

    $27.00
Red wine. Provence, France. Organic. 93% Mourvèdre, 7% Grenache. "As with the Southern Rhône Valley, Bandol appears to have had a banner year in 2016, and the 2016 Bandol from Domaine La Bastide Blanche is straight-up brilliant. Beautiful dark fruits, plums, spice, cedars, and garrigue notes all emerge from this full-bodied effort, which has terrific purity of fruit, a layered, opulent texture, sweet yet present tannins, and a great finish. • Franz Hirtzberger Riesling Federspiel Steinerterrassen 2016
    $35.00
White wine. Wachau, Austria. Sustainable. 100% Riesling. “I loved the bouquet of the 2016 Riesling Steinerterrassen Federspiel. It’s loaded with a sense of flinty minerality as well as exotic citrus, crushed mint, and a hint of petrol. Medium-bodied, with bright acidity, balancing sweetness, and a great finish, this is Riesling brilliance all the way. It’s approachable today given its purity and balance, but will evolve for 10-15 years. Bravo.” — 94 Points, Jeb Dunnuck (May 2019)

  • Daniel Bouland Morgon Schiste Bellevue 2017
    $29.00
Red wine. Morgon, Beaujolais, France. Sustainable. 100% Gamay. "The 2017 Morgon Schiste Bellevue is a brilliant Beaujolais and certainly worth seeking out. Loads of minerality, as well as ripe dark fruit fruits, give way to a medium-bodied, silky 2017 that has high yet integrated acidity, plenty of tannins, and superb overall balance. There’s no harm in drinking bottles today, but I suspect this cuvée will still be going strong in 10-15 years." — 93 Points, Jeb Dunnuck (May 2019)

  • Marc Plouzeau Domaine De La Croix Chinon Rouge Les Clos De Roches St Paul 2015
    $27.00
Red wine. Chinon, Loire Valley, France. 100% Cabernet Franc. Organic. "The 2015 Les Clos de Roches St Paul has a beautiful Cabernet Franc nose of sweet red currants and black cherries intermixed with a touch of tobacco, peppery herbs, and forest floor. It shows more floral and rose petal notes with time in the glass and is medium-bodied, fresh, and elegant on the palate. It’s not for those looking for over-the-top richness, but it’s seamless and poised on the palate and has ultra-fine tannins. It’s a beautiful wine to enjoy over the coming 5-7 years." — 93 Points, Jeb Dunnuck (May 2019)

  • Domaine de Ferrand Cotes-du-Rhone La Ferrande Syrah 2016
    $23.00
Red wine. Southern Rhône, France. Organic. 100% Syrah. "A Côtes du Rhône that needs to be tasted to be believed, the 2016 Domaine de Ferrand Côtes-du-Rhône La Ferrand comes from older Syrah vines around the estate (just to the north of Châteauneuf du Pape) and was brought up in barrel (I think this is the only wine from the estate to see oak). Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a vivid bouquet of blueberries, ground pepper, violets, and floral notes. I’d probably guess Cote Rotie in a blind tasting and it’s medium to full-bodied, has a layered, elegant texture, beautiful tannins, and a great finish." — 93 Points, Jeb Dunnuck, (May 2019)
