One of Spain's most prestigious winemaking regions, expressed through the beautiful wines of one incomparable estate...
If that sounds like a fun way to spend your Saturday, join us from noon to 4pm as we welcome Roger Valls Jove from elite Priorat estate Mas Martinet for a special Domaine Spotlight tasting and sale!
If you're not familiar with Priorat, this Saturday's tasting will make you a convert.
And while Priorat boasts a solid stable of top-notch producers, for us, the wines of Priorat start and end with Sara Perez and Mas Martinet.
Mas Martinet is located between the villages of Falset and Gratallops—the heart of a region that has undergone a winemaking upheaval that traces its roots to the late 1980s.
As Gerry Dawes wrote in a 2005 piece in The Wine News about Tarragona's new and powerful reds, "five once-fledgling producers whose names are now well known, with some approaching cult status—René Barbier (Clos Mogador), Carles Pastrana (Clos de L'Obac), Josep Lluís Pérez (Mas Martinet), Daphne Glorian (Clos Erasmus) and Alvaro Palacios (L'Ermita)—...descended upon Priorat in 1989 to make wine together. Their exceptional achievements caused a ripple effect that spurred the momentum."
Today, the wines of Priorat are some of Spain's most compelling, and the equal of the best that the French Mediterranean and all of Italy produces.
And Mas Martinet remains at the vanguard of the region's upper crust of producers.
Sara Perez (Josep Lluís's daughter)—the latest generation of pioneering winemakers at Mas Martinet—is widely regarded as among the most talented and innovative young winemakers, and not just in Priorat or Spain.
Here's what Drew Matich from Pulling the Cork said about Sara in 2009:
"...the bottom line is this: Sara's wines faithfully reflect the grapes of the vineyard in any given year. There are no winemaker games played to optimize or equalize the wine across different vintages. The grapes are blended, fermented, and aged as they come out of the vineyard. And from our tastings, the results were amazing."
This Saturday, Mas Martinet's Roger Valls Jove will help us taste our way through 6 cuvées, ranging from high-end wines that will change the way you think about Spanish reds to a quaffable offering from Montsant that you'll want to haul away by the caseful.
