The Wines of Languedoc-Roussillon—France's Biggest, Boldest Winemaking Region

The Languedoc-Roussillon churns out so much good wine, it's hard to decide which wines to feature in our tastings.

That's why we're back with another line-up of some of the best, fullest, most complex, and most underrated wines in all of France. (They also happen to be perfect for Autumn, so it's a great opportunity to stock up for the season!)

If you haven't had the chance to experience these wines (or if you just need a refresher), here's your chance: this Saturday, we'll dive back into the delicious world of the Languedoc-Roussillon, featuring 6 more wines from our excellent portfolio producers—including Domaine Gauby, Clos Marie, and more.

It's an often-overlooked fact that, together, the Languedoc and the Roussillon account for a full third of France's wine production.

The Roussillon is the southernmost wine-producing region in France, sharing a border with Spain along the Mediterranean Sea. Just to the north lies the Languedoc, covering the area along the coast and all the way up to the Southern Rhône.

Both are known for hot summers and flavorful wines—fruity, peppery red blends made from Carignan, Cinsault, and the reliable southern French trio of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre; and lively, floral whites made from Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris, Bourboulenc, and Clairette.

In the hands of our portfolio producers—which include some of the region's most talented and highly acclaimed winemakers—those varieties come together in some of France's boldest, most flavorful wines that make for ideal autumn drinking.

Gerard Gauby is widely regarded as the king of biodynamic winemaking in southern France, and The Wine Advocate's Jeb Dunnuck called Domaine Gauby "one of the top estates in France."

And John Gilman of The View From The Cellar had this to say about Christophe Peyrus: “The wines of Clos Marie are truly stunning, world class wines, and based on their current prices, this seems to be one of the great, still undiscovered gems in the world of great French wine! I cannot recommend them highly enough!”
