"The birthplace of wine"... "the next big wine region"... Georgia has been getting a lot of buzz for its potential as a top-flight wine country in recent years. But it takes more than buzz to earn a spot in the Weygandt portfolio.
So, a few years ago, Peter started tasting as many Georgian wines as he could. He traveled to Georgia in search of producers of traditional, natural, clean wines that reflect their terroir. Thousands of miles and hundreds of bottles later, we're excited to announce the addition of 3 talented winemakers to our family.
This Saturday, you can taste their wines for yourself. Join us from noon to 4pm for a special tasting and sale spotlighting the exciting world of Georgian wines, including 5 wines from 3 talented producers hand-picked by Peter!
George Wolski (his son is Andria) has a "day job" as a PhD engineer, traveling all over Europe as a consultant. But, like virtually every Georgian, he has vines and wine-making in his family.
Gia Togonidze is a professional artist, and his winemaking shows it—Peter calls his wines "the most elegant, graceful, and pure" of all the Georgian wines he tasted.
Gia and his family are well known in the Shalauri community and the international wine scene not only for their wines but also the way they graciously show hospitality and welcome in guests as if they were family. Togonidze's Wines are distinguished by rich aroma and bouquet.
Finally, the Minadze family has long historical connection with wine, and takes a traditional approach to harnessing the character of its Imeretian terroir.
All three winemakers are organic, and Andria and Tarasi Minadze are bio-dynamic. All three follow the traditional Georgian method of Qvevri vinification and aging, with no filtering and natural winemaking. And true to form, all express their place extremely well. We can say confidently that they are among the best-made Georgian wines you will find.
