Red wine. Côte de Beaune, Burgundy, France. Sustainable. 100% Pinot Noir. 2012 in Burgundy was a tough year and serves to prove the point that the producer is often more important than the appellation. In Volnay the vintage was wet and growers had a constant battle with mildew. Other tests for vignerons were hail in June, and a heat spike in July. Rigorous grape selection at the winery allowed Thierry Glantenay to overcome the challenges of the vintage and produce wines with pure fruit, fine tannins and an elegant expression of terroir. Look for flavors of morello cherry, red currant on the front palate, with darker fruit, earth and spice on the mid and back palate. There was no new wood used in this vintage, so the expression is truly the fruit and terroir. With time the tannins have softened and the fruit has become less primary.
