Jeb Dunnuck's Weygandt Favorites

"I love tasting with importer Peter Weygandt and he has an incredibly diverse portfolio that always seems to deliver the goods. Peter always comments that he loves crisp, pure wines, and while those characteristics are seemingly always present, I’d like to add that his wines also deliver concentration, depth, and intensity, as well as singular characters."

— Jeb Dunnuck, May 2019

Red wine. Côte de Beaune, Burgundy, France. Organic. 100% Pinot Noir. "Lots of kirsch, wild strawberry, rose petals, and minty, green herb notes emerge from the 2015 Chorey Les Beaune Les Bons Ores. Medium-bodied, with an elegant texture, light tannins, and beautiful balance, it shines for its complexity as well as its length. This beautiful wine from Jean-Pierre Guyon will keep for 10-15 years." — 92 Points, Jeb Dunnuck (May 2019)

  • Domaine Bachey-Legros Bourgogne Chardonnay 2016

White wine. Santenay, Burgundy, France. Sustainable. 100% Chardonnay. From calcareous soil that favors mineral notes, and aged in the barrel, contributing to the wine's roundness and aromatic complexity. The overall impression is of great freshness, with a bouquet of flowers and fresh fruit.

From 70+-year-old vines on a prime parcel in the Maranges appellation, this wine is concentrated, with an incredible black inky color. JUST ADDED: Balance, Depth & Flavor From Domaine Gauby, The Undisputed "King of the Roussillon"

Domaine Gauby's trailblazing commitment to a vigorous biodynamic viticultural regimen has culminated in a unique style of winemaking, demonstrating a near-perfect balance between power and restraint, and that unfailingly expresses the purity of provenance.

As a result of his commitment to these and other practices, Gerard is widely regarded as the king of biodynamic winemaking in southern France, and Jeb Dunnuck has called Domaine Gauby "one of the top estates in France."

  • Domaine Gauby Cotes du Roussillon Muntada 2011
Red wine. Roussillon, France. Biodynamic. "Gauby’s 2011 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Muntada, which comes from ancient, pre-phylloxera Grenache (45%), Carignan (35% and vines over 120 years in age) and Syrah (20%) vines, offers a deep, complex and almost distilled essence of wild herbs, blackcurrants, tar, licorice, sage brush and leather on the nose. There’s no makeup here, and what you get is the raw essence of the Roussillon. Spending 30 months in a combination of large and small barrels, it is full-bodied and rich, yet very focused and tight, with a firm, structured core. It will need 2-3 years of bottle age to round into form, yet will have upwards of 20 years, if not more, of total longevity." — 95+ Points, Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate #212 (April 2014)

  • Domaine Gauby Cotes du Roussillon Villages 'La Roque' 2012
Red wine. Roussillon, France. Biodynamic. "The la Roque cuvée from the Gauby family is produced entirely from eighty year-old grenache vines, with the wine hailing from the same vineyards from which the Muntada bottling is selected. The 2012 la Roque comes in at an even thirteen percent octane and is nicely pale in color (as grenache ought to be), offering up a bright and complex bouquet of raspberries, cherries, a touch of fruitcake, beautiful spice tones (more cloves and cinnamon, rather than garrigue), Provençal soil tones, spiced meats and a gentle topnote of lavender. On the palate the wine is pure, full and impressively transparent, with a good core, a fine impression of stony minerality, ripe, moderately chewy tannins and a long, tangy and still quite primary finish. This is still a young and slightly angular wine that needs more bottle age, but it has lovely sweet red fruit at the core and impressive soil signature and will be excellent when its blossoms." — 92+ Points, John Gilman, View from the Cellar #69 (May/June 2017)

  • Domaine Gauby Les Calcinaires Rouge 2016
Red wine. Roussillon, France. Biodynamic. Mourvedre, Syrah, Grenache, Carignan. "Tasting like a top-quality Côte Rôtie with its violets, pepper, obvious minerality, and assorted darker fruits, [this wine is] medium-bodied, with polished tannins, terrific purity and a great finish. It’s going to keep for a decade." — 92 Points, Jeb Dunnuck (May 2019)
